Political Science Study Program FISIP UNUD to Hold Public Lecture on a Decade of Joko Widodo’s Leadership University General

Denpasar, Tuesday, June 16, 2026 — The Political Science Study Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Udayana University, will hold a Public Lecture entitled “Understanding JOKOWI: Progressive Realism in Indonesian Politics, 2014–2024” on Monday, June 22, 2026.

The event will provide an academic space to examine and reflect on Indonesia’s political landscape throughout the decade of Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) leadership from 2014 to 2024. Through the perspective of progressive realism, the lecture will invite participants to explore how political ideas, policies, interests, and power dynamics developed and shaped Indonesia’s national political landscape during this period.

The discussion of Jokowi’s leadership is particularly significant, as the 2014–2024 period represents an important phase in Indonesia’s political development. Changes in government, public policy, institutional relations, political parties, and broader political dynamics provide a wide range of issues to be critically examined from a political science perspective.

The public lecture will feature Jean Couteau, a book author, sociologist, and Kompas columnist through the Udar Rasa column, and Benito Lopulalan, a writer. The perspectives of both speakers are expected to enrich the discussion and provide participants with broader insights into Indonesia’s political trajectory and the dynamics of the Jokowi era.

Beyond providing insights from writers and observers of Indonesian politics, the event is also designed as a forum for dialogue that encourages students to develop critical perspectives on political phenomena. Participants will be encouraged to examine politics not only through policies and institutions, but also through power relations, political interests, political actors, and the social changes that accompany them.

For Political Science students, forums such as this are an important part of learning beyond the classroom. Direct engagement with writers, academics, and political observers can broaden perspectives while connecting political theories with the realities of Indonesian politics.
