RESHAPING DEMOCRACY: VOICES FROM CAMPUS AND CIVIL SOCIETY FOR THE CODIFICATION OF ELECTION LAWS

Denpasar, Tuesday, October 7, 2025. The Political Science Study Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Universitas Udayana, organized a seminar entitled “Codification of Election Laws: Civil Society Proposals for Democratic Improvement” on Friday, October 3, 2025. The seminar served as an academic forum that brought together perspectives from academia, parliament, and civil society to discuss efforts to strengthen democracy through the improvement and restructuring of electoral regulations.

The seminar featured three speakers: Heroik M. Pratama, Executive Director of Perludem; Ahmad Doli Kurnia Tandjung, Deputy Chairperson of the Legislative Body of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI); and Kadek Dwita Apriani, Lecturer in Political Science at Universitas Udayana. The discussion was moderated by Ni Made Inten Supriyanti, Lecturer in Political Science at Universitas Udayana.

The discussion focused on the importance of codifying Election Laws as an effort to simplify and harmonize various electoral regulations. A more structured regulatory framework is expected to create rules that are simpler, more consistent, and easier to understand for various stakeholders involved in the democratic process.

In addition to regulatory aspects, the seminar highlighted the importance of protecting citizens’ voting rights and strengthening public accountability in the electoral process. The codification of election laws is considered an important step toward developing a more integrated electoral legal framework that can provide greater legal certainty.

The seminar also strengthened the involvement of the academic community in discussions on democracy and public policy. The exchange of perspectives among academics, parliament, and civil society provided an important space for sharing ideas and encouraging the development of electoral regulations that are more democratic, inclusive, and responsive to public interests.

Through this seminar, the Political Science Study Program, FISIP, Universitas Udayana, continues to encourage the development of political and democratic studies while expanding dialogue between higher education institutions and stakeholders in advancing a better electoral system.
