Two Udayana Political Science Lecturers Present in "Democracy In Changing World" FGD
Surabaya,
Udayana University Political Science Academics attended a Focus Group
Discussion (FGD) on the complexities of democracy which took place in Building
A of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Airlangga University. The activity was
carried out by inviting 17 invitees from various institutions. (20/10/2022)
In the
FGD held by the Airlangga Department of Political Science, Udayana Political
Science academics were also present to give their ideas related to the theme of
the discussion. Udayana Political Science was represented by I Ketut Putra
Erawan, M.A., Ph.D., as Executive Director of the Institute for Peace and
Democracy (IPD), as well as Udayana Political Science lecturer and Chair of
Warmadewa International Affairs, together with Gede Indra Pramana, S.IP., M.A.,
as Udayana Political Science Lecturer.
The
FGD activity which was attended by 17 invitees from a number of agencies raised
the theme "Democracy in a Changing World: Challenges and
Possibilities". The choice of this theme was motivated by the current condition
of democracy which is perceived as declining, stagnant, and even backward, as
well as changes in the world that have dramatically affected the core ideas of
democracy. Departing from this, this FGD activity aims to reflect, share, and
rethink to understand the root causes of democracy's challenges in forming
democratic guidelines.
To
achieve this goal, several points were discussed in the FGD activity
"Democracy in Changing World: Challenges and Possibilities", namely:
challenges and possibilities in responding to titular patronage and power
(dilemmas when developing political institutions and processes to nominate
candidates); challenges and possibilities in dealing with populism (related to
the relationship between leaders and constituents which easily develops and
leads to populism that goes beyond the boundaries of democracy); and the
challenges and possibilities of responding to an opinion without a public (the
issue of publics being entertained and shaped by audiences, as well as public
opinion agendas being shaped by elites, experts and the media).
It is
hoped that this activity will produce guidelines for democracy in order to
understand the deeper roots of democracy, and can help improve democratic
practices in Indonesia. (Tr)
